51 Senators Call on FDA to Take Decisive Action on Abortion Drugs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following the FDA’s approval of a new generic abortion drug, 51 U.S. Senators led by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have called on the FDA and Department of Health and Human Services to immediately reinstate critical safety measures on the chemical abortion pill removed by the Biden administration.

The Biden-era policy eliminated the in-person dispensing requirement, allowing mail-order abortion drugs without medical examination, identity confirmation, or screening for coercion and abuse.

As the Senate letter states:

“Contrary to the narrative peddled by the media that taking abortion pills is ‘safer than taking Tylenol,’ evidence shows that the risk of serious medical complications after taking mifepristone is at least twenty-two times higher than reported on the drug label. In fact, more than 1 in 10 women who take mifepristone will experience a serious adverse event.”

Recent research reviewing over 865,000 medically-induced abortions found that chemical abortion poses greater risks than revealed in clinical trials, with more than 10% of women experiencing serious adverse events including hemorrhaging, infection, and sepsis, with deaths reported.

Restoration of America Foundation Founder and CEO, Doug Truax, stated:

“We are heartened that 51 U.S. Senators recognize the extreme danger mifepristone poses to women across America and that immediate action is required.  There is no time to wait – this is a health emergency.  The only way to properly protect women from potential harm associated with mifepristone is to require an in-person appointment.”

The Senators recommend reinstating in-person dispensing requirements, suspending approval of new generic versions pending safety review, and withdrawing FDA guidance permitting pharmacy distribution without adequate medical supervision.
